David Bird has put much time and thought into the Harley-Davidson Sportster bolt-on hardtail that fits 1954 - 1978 (hardtails for later year ranges on the way shortly!). The beauty of this hardtail is it is a true bolt on (you can always weld it up as well if you like), but it doesn't utilize the shock mounts to bolt to like all the other Sporty hardtails available elsewhere. This gives a killer profile and stance and you don't get the weird angles that come with using the stock shock mounts. These hardtails use your stock rear wheel, axle, spacers and drum brake setup! All necessary mounting hardware is included, and these hardtails and all the hardware are 100% Made in the USA!

To see how easy it is to install one of these beauties, check out the 1954 - 1972 Sportster or the 1973 - 1978 Sportster hardtail installation instructions. The only difference in the two year ranges is a forged seat post / shock mount area versus the later square bar style, the install is just as easy for each.

These are available with your choice of either the looped or straight rear frame rails at the axle (see photos below for examples), and are available in 2", 4", and 6" stretch. You can also choose 1", 2", 3" or 4" of drop. The photos below of both straight and looped style are 4" stretch, 2" drop hardtails. The roller has a stock length front end on it (and no, the concho tool bag is not included with your hardtail order!)

For more information and frequently asked questions about our custom frames and hardtails, please check out the Frame FAQ.

These are custom made-to-order and currently take approximately 3-6 weeks to complete and ship. You will be charged the shipping at the time of purchase, and when your frame ships we will email over your tracking info.

NOTE TO AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMERS: If you are in Australia be sure to read the frame FAQ, due to your country's customs laws all frames ship freight and there will be additional charges in addition to the shipping shown during checkout.

Pros - VERY well made

Cons - none

Bolted on easy, looks great. Rides surprisingly well too, somehow feels less stiff than my newer 48. Really satisfied with it.

Pros - easy and looks perfect

Cons - none

I originally had ordered a 2" drop 2" stretch and it looked good. The problem was with my seat it didn't leave much room for me or the wife. Also with a solo seat, the mounts for the seat springs didn't line up with the cross tube. I sold it and went with a 4" stretch and a 2" drop. It sits perfectly and gave me more room for myself and a passenger. There are alot of options for stretch/drop. In my personal opinion, I think the 4" stretch/2"drop resembles other "real" hardtails the best. If you are in doubt, don't be. For the price, this thing does not look bolt on and you can weld it on pretty easily. 5 stars!

Pros - Easy to install, looks awesome, so many options, great quality

Cons - None

Ordered my hardtail in a 2"stretch 3" drop with a loop back and this thing looks amazing. Only took about three weeks to arrive. Quality bends and quality welds. The fitment was perfect and it took about an hour to install from start to finish.

Pros - Super easy install and a killer look at a fair price.

Cons - None

I put a David Bird hard tail on a 66 T120 Triumph I had 2 years ago. When I decided to hard tail my 75 sportster I looked around but the Bird hard tail in my opinion has the cleanest look. Anyone looking for a hard tail... go with a Bird you won't be disappointed.

Pros - great fit, quality, price

Cons - none

The hardtail bolted right on with surpisingly little effort. Would definately recommend to anyone. Great quality, fit, and price. Also somehow shipped earlier than expected. Lowbrow is badass and will order again.

Pros - Super simple!

Cons - None

Hard tail looks awesome. 2" stretch with 2" drop is bad to the bone. Minor cutting grinding to stock frame but nothing major. Does whats it's supposed to and bolts right on.

Pros - Looks killer, awesome welds, real solid!

Cons - Doesn't play well with drum brake anchor stud vs. bolt

Installation of the hardtail itself was pretty easy and straight forward. Instructions were clear and came with all the hardware. Straight leg, 4" stretch and 3" drop looks rad and is super low. Took the time to weld it on instead of bolting it. Bike rides straight as an arrow. Only down side I have had is my drum anchor. Everyone I have seen running this hardtail is using the bolt style anchor. I have the stud style. Shims were required to get the drum side plate square in the drum, then because the thick anchor plate, left little room for the anchor nut and no room for a lock washer. Plus the machined slot for the anchor is much bigger than the stud, causing a horrible vibration while braking. Will be converting it over to the bolt style anchor to fix the problem.

Pros - bolted right on, looks awesome

Cons -

followed the directions and bolted it on with no problem, had to lean into one section to get the bolt to bite but that was about it. bike looks great, rides great, used stock parts and kept my vin. super easy and affordable

Pros - Quality, Fit, Ease

Cons -

Solid Craftsmanship. Killer look. Love the loop tail. I think I'll weld my top section to smooth the look of it out. The install was so easy!! I'm great at installing things that only fit one way. Props to Lowbrow for promising and delivering on par as well. It came exactly when I expected it to.

If you are confused about which bolt-on hardtail to get for your bike, look no further. This is it! I bolted mine up, loved it, then decided to weld it, pulled the 2 top bolts out, packed the holes with weld and now it truly is a one piece hardtail frame with RADITUDE! Highly recommended~ p.s. I went with the 4" stretch, 2" drop and it rocks!

Pros - Everything

Cons - Nothing

I ordered this after fooling around with a another companies weld-on and realizing that it was so crooked out of the box that it wasn't worth the trouble. This David Bird hardtail was super easy to install (literally one hour) and is straight as an arrow. The ability to customize the stretch was a plus, so now I do not have to deal with that stupid gap in front of the wheel that the weld-on's create. Highly recommended to anyone in the market.

Pros - Everything

Cons - None other then the concho tool bag not coming with it!!!!

Very very nice. I decided to weld the top and bolt the bottom. I just got it back from my weld and love it. Very nice job guys. Highly recommended

Pros - Pretty easy to install, looks great, same price as other much less quality bolt ons. Great quality welds and workmanship. Also fits stock set up perfectly.

Cons - Not any.

Had some minor issues getting my seat posts ground down enough but it fit pretty easily. All stock parts fit without any problems so no need to buy new ones. Like 1/4 of the cost of buying a full custom frame.

Pros -

Cons -

The hardtail went on with ease and the fit is perfection. All the cutting and blending can be done with basic tool and it takes just a couple of hours. There's not another bolt-on kit that's even in the conversation with this puppy, excellent fit and craftsmanship. Thanks for the quality product guys.

Pros - easy fitment

Cons - none

It was fairly easy to install and my rear sprocket was able to be adjusted to perfection versus the crappy bolt on hardtail i had on it (which is for sale now). all stock parts, including oil tank mounted with no mods. Thanks Guys for the sweet hardtail
