David Bird does it again with a hardtail frame unlike any other that fits 1982 - 2003 Harley-Davidson Sportsters. Your stock axle, wheel spacers, caliper, rotor and pulley all fit right back in place on your new rigid frame! This hardtail section uses your stock front frame section which keeps the stock rake and VIN numbers intact so you do not have to re-title a new manufactured frame.

To see how easy it is to install one of these beauties, check out the tech tip below. As always, all work should be completed by an experienced fabricator, and all welding should be done by a certified welder!

These are available with your choice of either the looped or straight rear frame rails at the axle (see photos below for examples), and are available in a 2", 4",or 6" stretch. You can also choose 1", 2", 3" or 4" of drop. The photos below of both straight and looped style are 4" stretch, 2" drop hardtails. Construced of 1-1/4", .120" wall tubing, the same diameter as your stock front frame section for a seamless look.

A note about pulleys and belts: This frame is designed to work with your stock pulleys, but unless you have a 0" stretch, the stock belt will not work. Most people choose to do a chain conversion when hardtailing a belt driven Sporty, but if you decide to keep the belt system you will need to find the appropriate length belt for you model/year/pulley combo. We do not have this information and finding the correct belts for a longer stretch may be difficult.

For more information and frequently asked questions about our custom frames and hardtails, please check out the Frame FAQ.

These are custom made-to-order and currently take approximately 8-12 weeks to complete and ship. You will be charged the shipping at the time of purchase, and when your frame ships we will email over your tracking info.

NOTE TO AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMERS: If you are in Australia be sure to read the frame FAQ, due to your country's customs laws all frames ship freight and there will be additional charges in addition to the shipping shown during checkout.

    Awesome product.... Review by Rigidchop
Awesome product. Each one made to order so it takes about a month to ship BUT it is made to your spec!

Truly something I couldn't have done better myself.

Go with 2" or more stretch to avoid getting the dreaded seat post triangle plate (fugly). (Posted on 3/2/2015)

I am really happy with this purchase. I got the 4" stretch, and 4" drop, and it looks great. I would recommend this hard tail to anyone. (Posted on 4/2/2014)

    Awesome Product Review by Matt
This hardtail is a high quality and well thought out product. I'm a certified welder and the build of this product surprised me with it's quality. It was better than I was expecting. Be sure to take your time cutting and grinding the old frame section. Blend everything smooth and set yourself up for success before putting on the new frame section. Fit up prior to welding was easy, the frame section squared itself up almost on it's own. I TIG welded everything except for the center on the down tube which had to be MIG welded. This is truly a hardtail in a night project. (Posted on 5/23/2015)

Slick and Easy Review by Joel T
I met David Bird at Born Free 6 and talked to him about his frames. He sold me on the idea that his frames were designed for the garage builder; someone who wants to build a bad ass bike but might not have a full lift and shop to build a bike. Got my frame for my 2000 Sporty and it went together super easy. Everything lined up perfectly and welded right together. Would recommend this to anybody wanting to take the plunge without buying a completely new frame. (Posted on 7/8/2015)

    Amazing quality Review by Nicholas
I was pleased right out of the box. Clean welds and about as easy to install as it gets. 2" stretch, 1" drop was the perfect fit for me at 5' 10". I have put around 2000 miles on my chop now and couldn't be happier I went with the David Bird. (Posted on 8/8/2015)

So easy a 19 y/o could do it Review by Dennis
When this was dropped off at my house (2 1/2 weeks early) the direction clearly stated that all work be done by a professional fabricator etc. I took a saws-all, and a grinder to the old frame, and got the new tail section to fit the old frame like a glove. welds on the section by the tank were a little difficult for me. Long story short, more intimidating than it seems. (Posted on 9/14/2015)

I ordered this for... Review by Eric
I ordered this for my 93 sportster bobber project. Got a 4" stretch 2" drop straight end. I can't believe how awesome this things fits to the frame. Grab a buddy and some beer on Friday and ride to work on a badass hardtail sportster on Monday, it's that easy. Really satisfied with it. But damn does grinding down old welds suck haha (Posted on 2/21/2015)

Quality was far... Review by Nick
Quality was far better than I expected. The welds are perfect and the fitment was simple. Went from swing arm to rigid in an evening. I went with a 2" stretch and 1" drop, and I love the lines. The 2" stretch doesn't have the ugly triangle piece at the top wishbone area either. For the price I don't think anyone can do better. (Posted on 5/2/2014)

got this for my 2000 sportster custom to a rust rat bobber type build. fit and all is like other reviews, i had no problems and two 3/4 washers got axle spaced just right. not as clean as some others, but that is the look i am going for, and what do ya do with the hole left from the swing arm? ...i really need a stash tube to put paperwork in... glad i picked this one, for the price, fit and finish, cant go wrong (Posted on 6/8/2014)
