Motorcycle Grips FAQ
What are motorcycle grips made of?
Motorcycle grips can be made from a variety of materials. Everything from billet aluminum motorcycle grips and steel to rubber and plastic compounds or any combination of these materials. You can even find grips made of foam and leather. The variety of materials allow for different levels of comfort for the rider. It simply comes down to rider preference.
What are the most comfortable motorcycle grips?
It depends on who you ask and what you like. Some people will tell you foam grips are really comfortable, and they are. Rubber grips are also very comfortable and they can help dampen some of the vibration that travels through your handlebars. It is really up to you to try the different style of grips to determine what is the most comfortable for you.
Another thing to consider is diameter. Handlebar grips come in a variety of outside diameters (ODs). Some riders prefer a slimmer grip, while others enjoy the comfort of a thicker grip.
How do you stop motorcycle grips from slipping off the handlebars?
Typically, grips are bolted to the handlebars when installing on most cruiser-style applications. If you have rubber grips or motocross style grips, you will need to use some type of adhesive to install them on the handlebars.
Check out our How to Install Motorcycle Grips in 3 Steps article for great step-by-step info on several install options. You can use grip glue to install this type of motorcycle grip or you can uses old school methods like spray paint or even hair spray. Simply shoot a small amount inside the grip and slide it on the handlebar before it dries.
Motocross riders will also use safety wire to help keep the grips in place after glued applications. If you have knurled handlebars you can install rubber grips without adhesive by using an air hose. Insert the tip of the air hose inside the grip and push onto the bar while forcing air into the grip.
How are motorcycle grips measured?
The basic measurement needed when determining your grip size is the motorcycle handlebar diameter. Typically motorcycles have a 7/8” diameter or a 1” diameter handlebars. This measurement is taken at the end of the handlebars where the grips are mounted. Take a look at our Motorcycle Handlebar Guide for more info on how to measure your bars, as well as how to choose the most comfortable bars that offer great handling and control.
Typically, larger diameter handlebars, like 1 ¼” handlebars, have been turned down where the grips are installed. It’s important to know that your throttle grip will have a larger diameter than your left handlebar grip (clutch-side) so it can accommodate the throttle tube.
