      Cycle Electric FAQ

What makes Cycle Electric regulators different from standard shunt regulators?
Standard shunt regulators send excess current to ground, which keeps the stator operating at maximum load and temperature. Cycle Electric rectifying regulators block excess current instead, helping reduce stator temperature and engine drag while providing a smoother, more consistent charge. This can extend both stator and battery life.
Do Cycle Electric alternator kits require a Cycle Electric rotor?
No. Cycle Electric alternator kits without an “R” suffix are designed to use the factory Harley-Davidson rotor. Kits with an “R” suffix include a Cycle Electric rotor and are intended for builds where the original rotor is worn or its magnetism has weakened.
What Cycle Electric generator fits a 1970s Shovelhead?
The Cycle Electric DGV-5000L fits 1965–1984 Harley-Davidson Big Twins, including 1970s Shovelheads, and provides 12-volt output. For motorcycles with worn generator mounting threads, the DGV-5000-LH includes Heli-Coil inserts. The CE-540L is a replacement regulator for bikes that already have a Cycle Electric generator installed.
