A motorcycle kicker pedal exists for one reason: starting the bike without a battery or electric starter, either because the bike is a kickstart-only build or as a backup when the electric system fails. Kicker pedal styles range from stock-replacement chrome levers to custom options like honeycomb, cast aluminum, and folding pedals, fitting Harley-Davidson Big Twins from 1936 to 1977 and XL Sportsters from 1957 to 1976. A heavy-duty 5-speed kickstarter conversion kit is available for 1985-1998 Big Twins that want a full kickstart setup added back in, since many later Big Twins shipped without one from the factory. Triumph and BSA riders have dedicated kickstart levers and arms for 650 and 750cc twins and BSA Triples.

Riders converting to a kickstart-only setup often add a jockey shifter at the same time, since both changes are common on a stripped-down chopper build.
