      Motorcycle Speedometers FAQ

How do I know which speedometer ratio I need?
This is the most critical question. The speedometer's ratio must match the ratio of your bike's speedometer drive unit. Common ratios are 2:1 (often for front wheel drive units) and 2240:60 (common for many Harley transmission-driven speedos). If the ratios don't match, your speed reading will be incorrect. You must confirm your bike's required ratio before ordering.
What's the difference between a transmission drive and a wheel drive?
A transmission-driven speedometer connects via a cable to a port on the side of your transmission case. A front wheel-driven speedometer connects to a small gearbox on the front axle that is turned by the wheel's rotation. You need to identify which system your motorcycle has to ensure you get a compatible speedometer and cable.
Why is my new speedometer's needle bouncing?
A bouncing needle is almost always caused by the speedometer cable, not the speedometer itself. This happens when the inner cable binds and releases inside the housing. Ensure your cable is routed with gentle, sweeping curves and has no sharp bends or kinks. If the problem persists, the cable may need to be lubricated or replaced.
