Motorcycle Tank Fabrication Parts FAQ
What thread size petcock bung do I need for a Harley-Davidson petcock?
Standard Harley-Davidson petcocks and most common aftermarket fuel valves use a 22mm thread. If your petcock uses an NPT thread, check whether it requires a 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch NPT bung before ordering. These thread types are not interchangeable. A 22mm-to-1/4-inch NPT adapter is also available when the bung and petcock threads do not match.
What is the difference between a vented and unvented filler cap?
A vented filler cap allows air to enter the tank as fuel is consumed, preventing a vacuum that could stop fuel flow to the petcock. An unvented cap is used when the tank has a separate vent line or another venting method. Most custom chopper and bobber tanks without a separate vent require a vented cap. If the tank vents through a separate bung, petcock, or another fitting, an unvented cap is appropriate.
How do I install a DIY fuel sight gauge kit?
Drill two 5/8-inch holes in the front face of the tank, spaced vertically to cover the fuel range you want to display. Insert the tophat bungs so their flanges sit flush against the tank, then weld them in place. After welding, pressure-testing, and sealing the tank, install the 90-degree fittings, attach the clear tubing with the stainless steel hose clamps, and use the visible fuel column to monitor the tank level. A complete installation guide is available on the Lowbrow Customs website.
Do I need to seal a raw steel tank before welding in bungs?
No. Weld all bungs, filler necks, and other fittings into the raw steel tank before applying sealant. Welding on a sealed tank can damage the sealant and create a fire hazard. Once fabrication is complete and the tank has been pressure-tested for leaks, apply the tank sealant according to the manufacturer's instructions.
