      Oil Tanks FAQ

How much oil does a Harley or Sportster oil tank hold?
Harley-Davidson Big Twins and XL Sportsters typically use oil tanks with a 3- to 4-quart capacity. Exact capacity varies by tank style and model year, so check the product listing for the specific oil tank you're considering.
      What's the difference between a weld-on, bolt-on, and clamp-on oil tank?
A weld-on oil tank is permanently welded to the frame, a bolt-on tank attaches using existing frame mounting points without welding, and a clamp-on tank is secured with a strap or clamp. The right mounting style depends on your frame and hardtail setup.
Will a Harley oil tank work on my Triumph or BSA?
Not directly. Triumph and BSA motorcycles need oil tanks with the correct fittings for the OEM-style Triumph oil feed filter and return T fitting, which differ from Harley oil tank fittings. This collection includes dedicated oil tanks for British motorcycles.
Should I choose a steel or aluminum oil tank?
Steel oil tanks in dimpled, domed, and smoothie styles work well for most Harley chopper builds and are the more common choice. Aluminum tanks, including finned Choppahead or Mooneyes styles, offer a different look for a more polished custom build.
