Motorcycle Air Intake & Fuel Systems FAQ

What is the difference between the Lowbrow Customs louvered air cleaner for CV carbs and the S&S Super E version?
The mounting backplate is different. CV carb and EFI Harley-Davidson applications from 1991 to 2020 use the standard Harley-Davidson oval air cleaner bolt pattern, while S&S Super E and G carburetors use a smaller round mounting configuration. The two versions are not interchangeable. If you've replaced your CV carb with an S&S Super E, order the Super E version. A Cycle Standard adapter is also available to mount a CV-style oval air cleaner on an S&S Super E or G.
Do I need a carburetor support bracket if my carb is already bolted to the manifold?
Yes. The manifold bolts alone do not prevent lateral flex at the carburetor body under vibration. On Harley-Davidson Sportsters and Big Twins with rubber-mounted Evo engines, this movement can eventually crack the carb body at the manifold connection or cause the manifold gasket to fail. A carburetor support bracket ties the carb to a fixed mounting point, such as a frame tab or motor case boss, and helps prevent that movement. It is a standard addition on Evo-powered builds running a CV or S&S carburetor.
What size fuel line fits most Harley-Davidson carbureted applications?
Most Harley-Davidson CV carb, S&S Super E, and Linkert applications use 1/4-inch inside diameter fuel line from the petcock to the carburetor. Some higher-flow applications use 5/16-inch ID line. Triumph applications vary by year and carburetor setup. Check the petcock outlet and carb inlet fitting size before choosing hose diameter. A 1/4-inch NPT petcock commonly runs 1/4-inch fuel line, while a 1/8-inch NPT fitting may require an adapter to use 1/4-inch hose.
