Motorcycle Axle Hardware FAQ
What is a pike nut axle cover and when should I use one?
A pike nut threads over the standard axle nut and adds a pointed profile referencing 1950s and 1960s American custom hardware. It is a common detail choice on choppers and bobbers where the axle is exposed. If the build runs a cleaner, minimal aesthetic, the smooth axle cover is the better fit. Both mount identically.
How do I find the right axle nut kit for my Harley-Davidson?
Colony kits are listed by platform and year range. Softail, Sportster, Dyna, FXR, and FL/FLT models each use different axle hardware, and specs change across production years. Front and rear kits are ordered separately. Confirm both the platform and year against the product listing before ordering.
Do I need to order front and rear axle hardware separately?
Yes. Front and rear axle hardware use different thread sizes, spacer dimensions, and nut profiles. Order a front kit and a rear kit separately for a complete refresh on both ends of the bike.
Are Colony axle hardware kits made in the USA?
Yes. Colony Machine has been producing USA-made motorcycle hardware for Harley-Davidson platforms for more than 40 years. All Colony axle nut kits, spacer kits, and pike nut covers in this collection are manufactured domestically in chrome, CAD plated, and parkerized finishes.
