Types of Motorcycle Controls

There are three basic types of motorcycle control positions that you will find on a variety of motorcycles. 

A standard seating position is the most common seating position which uses standard controls. This is the seating position where you are sitting straight and the footpegs pretty much in line with your shoulders. This is the seating position you will find on everything from mopeds to dirt bikes, street bikes, and scooters. 

Next, you have motorcycles that use more of sport seating position. This is where your feet are moved back toward the rear of the bike and your upper body is leaned over the tank. This is the position you will find on most sport bikes where rear sets are used. 

Finally, you have the cruiser motorcycles with forward controls. These controls are called forward controls because they move the controls in front of the rider.

Riding with Motorcycle Forward Controls

Riding a motorcycle with forward controls is a little bit different than riding a motorcycle with standard controls. Motorcycle forward controls are popular because it gives the rider a little bit more room and it allows the rider to stretch out a bit. This is a much more comfortable seating position especially when you like to go on longer rides. If you are taller than most folks, the forward controls can be really helpful as they will give you a little more room for your legs. 

Riding a bike with custom forward controls will seem a little awkward at first, but only takes a little time to get used to. Often adding motorcycle forward foot controls can reduce the amount of lean angle your bike can perform, so it is a good idea to take some time to get used to things.

Forward Control Kits

Sometimes builders have a bike with standard controls and they decide to convert it to forward controls. This can be done with an aftermarket forward control kit. This kit will mount to the frame and create a foot position that moves the controls forward. These forward control kits often include all the extended shift rods and hardware you need to complete the job. They use the stock frame mounting positions to accomplish the job, so there is no welding needed.
