      Motorcycle License Plates FAQ

What is the cleanest way to mount a license plate on a hardtail or rigid frame Harley?
An axle plate bracket is the most common approach on hardtail and rigid frame builds. It positions the license plate at the rear axle rather than on the fender, keeping the entire rear section uncluttered. Gasbox and Lowbrow Customs both offer axle plate brackets for 1936–1957 Big Twin rigid frame applications. Be sure to confirm axle diameter before ordering.
Do I need a separate light to illuminate the license plate on a custom build?
Yes, in most states. License plates must be illuminated when riding at night. Common options include LED bolt lights, LED license plate frames, and separate light mounts. Cycle Standard mini LED bolt lights are one of the most compact solutions. Always verify your state's specific lighting requirements before selecting a setup.
What is the difference between a vertical and laydown license plate mount?
A laydown mount positions the license plate parallel to the ground or at a shallow angle and typically bolts to the rear fender in the standard plate location. A vertical mount positions the plate perpendicular to the ground, usually at the axle or on a bracket extending below the fender. Vertical mounts are especially popular on choppers and bobbers because they help maintain a clean-looking fender.
Can I mount a license plate without drilling into my fender?
Yes. Axle plate brackets, primary mounts, peg mounts, and turn signal bar mounts can all be installed without drilling into the fender. Weld-on brackets require welding but eliminate the need for fender drilling. The best no-drill solution depends on your frame configuration and preferred plate location. Always review the product's fitment requirements before ordering.
