This weld-on hardtail rear frame section from Lowbrow Customs is an absolute perfect fit on 1958-1984 Harley Big Twin swingarm frames (stock front frame section not included). This weld-on rear frame section converts your Shovelhead or Panhead swingarm frame into a rigid rear end with cast steel lugged axle plates for use with a 3/4" axle and disc rear brake.
The converted frame dimensions will be the same as a stock Panhead. Cutting and removal of the rear section of your existing stock frame is necessary. Detailed how-to hardtail installation instructions can be viewed here.
Additionally, check out a step-by-step Hardtail install blog article here, with plenty of photos showing the exact process to install this specific hardtail.
All tubing matches the stock frame tubing diameter: upper rear tubes 1", thick walled steel and 1-1/8" diameter lower frame rails that match the stock frame. The axle slots are for a 3/4" axle and disc brake rear wheel and have 1-3/4" of front to back adjustability. This hardtail is designed to use a Shovelhead rear axle, Harley OEM 41552-73, along with axle adjuster spacers, Harley OEM 47577-00 (Also available from Colony Machine, SKU 009690). The axle plates are pre-threaded for 3/8"-24 standard 1936-1972 Harley style axle adjusters such as Colony Machine #7704-2 Rear Chain Adjusters SKU 001743 in chrome (not included). The lower tubes will be welded with internal solid steel bungs for a strong joint. This blends the installed hardtail seamlessly into your stock frame.
Installation involves measuring and marking the stock frame for where to cut, cutting off the rear frame section, fitting up the hardtail and welding in place. Tools required will be a cut-off wheel or saw, disc sander for weld prep and paint removal, a drill with 1/4" bit and a TIG or MIG welder. Inexperienced builders may cut and assemble the frame themselves, and have an experienced welder do the welding.
