Motorcycle Suspension FAQ
What is the difference between the Burly Brand Slammer and Slammer Plus shocks?
Burly Brand Slammer shocks measure 10.5 inches and provide a significant lowering effect for a slammed Sportster stance. Slammer Plus shocks are slightly taller, offering a more moderate drop while retaining additional ride height. The 15-inch Burly Stiletto shocks are intended for stock-height or raised suspension setups. Compare your motorcycle's original shock length with the product specifications to achieve your desired ride height.
Will a Progressive Suspension drop-in fork lowering kit change how the front end handles?
Yes. A fork lowering kit reduces suspension travel and increases the fork oil level, resulting in a slightly firmer front suspension. Lowering the front end also changes the steering geometry slightly. While this is suitable for most street builds, reduced fork travel means the suspension has less ability to absorb larger bumps and impacts.
Do I need a full suspension kit or just rear shocks to lower my Sportster?
For a modest drop, replacing the rear shocks with a shorter set, such as Burly Slammer shocks, is usually sufficient. For a more aggressive lowered stance with balanced front-to-rear proportions, combine shorter rear shocks with a front fork lowering kit. The Burly Slammer suspension kit includes both rear shocks and front fork components for a complete lowering solution.
Can I run a springer front end on a Sportster that came with telescopic forks?
Yes, but you'll need a compatible neck stem. The Mid-USA Hardbody springer is designed for Harley-Davidson neck dimensions and uses a 3/4-inch front axle. Before ordering, verify the neck cup and stem dimensions for your specific frame year. The springer also uses 4-3/4-inch-on-center riser spacing, so an adapter kit may be required if your existing risers are different.
