      Motorcycle Transmission Hardware FAQ

How do I know which transmission mounting kit fits my Big Twin?
Colony produces two separate Big Twin transmission mounting kits split at the 1977 model year. The early kit covers 1965 to early 1977. The late kit covers late 1977 to 1986. The mounting configuration changed mid-production, so confirm your specific year and whether it falls in the early or late 1977 production run before ordering. Your frame and transmission will have date codes that help identify which kit applies.
What is the difference between chrome plated, CAD plated, parkerized, and zinc plated transmission hardware?
Chrome plated is a dress-up finish for visible hardware on show-quality or custom builds. CAD plated is a cadmium-style finish that closely matches the appearance of original Harley-Davidson OEM hardware, making it the correct choice for stock restorations. Parkerized is a matte grey phosphate finish used on military and industrial hardware, found on some original Harley-Davidson fasteners from specific eras. Zinc plated is a standard corrosion-resistant finish suited for hardware that will not be highly visible.
Does this collection cover Sportster transmission hardware as well as Big Twin?
Yes. Sportster-specific parts include the mainshaft sprocket nut and lock kit for 1971 to 1984 Sportsters, the shifter shaft bushing and seal kit covering 1952 to 1984 Ironhead and early Evo Sportster models, and shifter linkage hardware for 1975 to 1976 XLH/XLCH models. Big Twin and Sportster hardware is not interchangeable, so confirm the platform before ordering.
Where can I find the transmission components themselves if I need more than hardware?
The hardware collection covers fasteners, cover screws, mounting kits, and sealing components. For complete transmissions, gear sets, and internal transmission components, browse complete transmissions and transmission gear sets for the full drivetrain rebuild range.
