Why You Should Check Your Motorcycle Wheel Bearings

Replacing your motorcycle wheel bearings is a good way to keep your favorite wheels running smooth and true. Your wheel bearings are subject to contamination from dirt and debris as you use them.

Bearings are commonly packed with grease and grease retains dirt. If you have ever been in the shop and accidentally placed you hand in some grease, you will quickly learn that it tends to get everywhere. It’s sticky and because it’s sticky, it tends to retain dirt. This is not good for your wheel bearings. How to Replace Sealed Motorcycle Wheel Bearings

Once you remove the rear wheel you will need to remove any wheel spacers and seals to get to the bearings. Make sure you have some grease, replacement motorcycle bearings, and some brake cleaner.
The next step is to make sure there to remove any inner retainer clips. These are usually spring clips but sometimes maybe a treaded retainer ring.
The wheel bearing will come out the same direction it goes in. To remove the motorcycle wheel bearing, a bearing puller or bearing removal tool. These tools are inserted into the center of the bearing and then a slide hammer is used to remove the bearing out of the wheel.
The next step is to clean the inside of the wheel hub, then apply a small amount of clean grease to the inside of the hub so the bearing can slide into place.
Next insert the bearing into the hub and carefully tap the bearing down avoiding any pressure on the inner race. A deep well socket that is the same diameter as the outside wheel bearing race is a good tool to use for this step.
Once the bearing is in place you can replace your circlip and insert your seals and spacers and remount your wheel.
