Motorcycle Engine Hardware FAQ
What finish should I choose for Harley-Davidson engine hardware?
Chrome is the standard choice for show bikes and clean custom builds where the engine hardware is highly visible. CAD plating provides a more period-correct finish for many pre-1980 restorations, where chrome may look out of place. Parkerized hardware suits military-era motorcycles and vintage 45 applications. Zinc plating is a practical, corrosion-resistant option for working bikes where appearance is not the main priority.
Do I need platform-specific head bolts, or will any set fit my motor?
You need head bolts designed for your specific engine platform. Thread specifications, shank length, and head profile vary between Knucklehead, Panhead, Shovelhead, Ironhead Sportster, and Evo engines. Using the wrong bolts can damage the threads or provide inadequate clamping force at the head gasket. Always match the Colony part number to your engine year, displacement, and cylinder head specifications before ordering.
What is a complete show bike hardware kit, and what does it cover?
Colony complete show bike kits replace the engine's visible fasteners with a matched chrome or acorn-nut-style hardware set. Depending on the application, the kits cover timing cover screws, cam cover screws, oil pump bolts, primary hardware, and other exposed engine fasteners in one package. Kits are available for 1978–1984 Shovelhead, 1987–1991 FLT and FXR, and 1994–2003 Sportster models.
Does this collection include Triumph engine hardware?
Yes, particularly for side cover hardware. Gardner-Westcott and British Standard offer Allen hardware sets for 1969-up Triumph 650cc and 750cc motorcycles. These kits replace visible side cover fasteners and are available in stainless steel or standard finishes. For additional hardware, including cylinder base nuts, Colony part #8438 fits 1969-up Triumph motorcycles as well as certain Sportster applications.
